She was an outstanding student and was well versed in philosophy with a particular interest in phenomenology. Eventually she became interested in the Catholic Faith, and in 1922, she was baptized in Germany. Eleven years later Edith entered the Carmelite Order. Because of the ramifications of politics in Germany, Edith, whose name in religion n was Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, was sent to the Carmelite convent in Holland. When the Nazis conquered Holland, Teresa was arrested, and, with her sister Rose, was sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz. Teresa died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz in 1942 at the age of fifty-one.  She was a great promoter of Women’s Conferences in her time.

SAINT OF THE WEEK:  St. Monica Feast Day:  August 27       Patron Saint of: Mothers

PEARL OF THE WEEK:  “Jesus Has A Question For You” by Msgr. Richard C. Antall. 978-0-87973-985-0 (ID#985), 208 pp., $11.95

A strikingly unique series of meditations on the 41 questions Jesus asks of his followers in the Gospels.  What will you answer when Jesus asks you?
“Who do you say that I am?” Maybe that sounds like an easy one if we remember our catechism. How about this one: “Why are you afraid?”

Jesus asked His disciples these questions 2,000 years ago, and he’s still asking them today. How will we answer? Long a favorite for his spellbinding stories and his profound knowledge of Scripture, Msgr. Richard C. Antall — a missionary priest who lived through the civil war in El Salvador — brings us a strikingly different series of meditations on the 41 questions Jesus asks in the Gospels.

You’ll be inspired, disturbed, uplifted, and challenged. If you try to answer the questions Jesus asks, you might even be changed forever.

This week’s topic is another interesting one! A Catholic High School teacher and two students speak about their experiences in reading the story of a Palestinian priest who grew up in the Galilee area. His book, Blood Brothers tells about growing up in Galilee and in 1948, at the age of 8, experiencing the tragedy of his poeple – to be evicted, along with his whole village, by the Israeli authorities and become a refugee in his own country. Today, Archbishop Chacour has become an ambassador for non-violence and someone, who not only preaches, but lives the Sermon on the Mount taught by the Lord Jesus. To learn more about Elias Chacour; go to www.pilgrimsofibillin.org.

PEARL OF THE WEEK  -  For a tri-fold pamphlet that easily expresses the beauty of life and dignity of the human person titled “WHY YOU MATTER”:    http://www.usccb.org/prolife/programs/rlp/2009/bartunekpamphlet.pdf

SAINT OF THE WEEK   -   St. Maria Goretti (1890-1902).  * Feast Day is July 6th.  She is patron of youth, young women, purity and victims of rape.   Maria refused to submit to an attack on her virginity by 20 year old Alessandro Serenelli.  Not yet 12 years old, she shouted, “No, it’s a sin! I will not do it!”   So Alessandro stabbed her to death. Maria forgave him and became a saint because she loved God above all else. It was, and is, Love’s Bravest Choice.

The beautiful message of purity and forgiveness demonstrated by St. Maria inspires people of all ages, and in any place or time, because it is an ageless story of rare and heroic courage.

Read more about this young saint;  www.mariagoretti.org.

Official Prayer to St. Maria GorettiOh Saint Maria Goretti who, strengthened by God’s grace, did not hesitate even at the age of twelve to shed your blood and sacrifice life itself to defend your virginal purity, look graciously on the unhappy human race which has strayed far from the path of eternal salvation. Teach us all, and especially youth, with what courage and promptitude we should flee for the love of Jesus anything that could offend Him or stain our souls with sin. Obtain for us from our Lord victory in temptation, comfort in the sorrows of life, and the grace which we earnestly beg of thee (here insert intention), and may we one day enjoy with thee the imperishable glory of Heaven.   Amen.
